Wow! I’m going to try it out this weekend. I’ll probably make it for my father on Father’s Day too but I’m also thinking… his two favorite things in the world are chocolate and baby back ribs. I’m thinking of tinkering with these ingredients for a baby back version (not braised, barbecue). Any ideas?

I spotted this particular first class recipe a short while back, subsequently went yesterday to buy the ingredients and then served it for the afternoon meal, simply delicious.

I had short ribs at Finale Restaurant the other night and was looking for a similiar recipe to do at home and this seems to be it. As Caroline says, this is something that could be served up at a dinner party. They served it in a rimmed soup bowl with roasted potato slices and baby carrots.

This recipe stopped me in my Webby tracks as it combines three of my culinary weaknesses: chocolate stout, short ribs and star anise. Remarkable!

This seems like one of those recipes that you can casually serve up at a dinner party and come off as a hero… all the hard stuff done days before. Love it. Also fun to think of serving with beer instead of the usual red wine.
